Star Fleet Records Personnel File
Name: Ensign Nuitanna Nyx (prefers to be called Nyx)
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Species: Betazoid
Home planet/Country/Nationality: Betazed
Affiliation: United Federation of Planets
Occupation: Chief communications officer, science officer (in other words, primary duty is that of communications officer, but her science background means she can also perform the duties of a science officer)
Blood Type: ...if Nyx were human, likely she would be blood type B. As she is a Betazoid, it's unclear if they have such bloodtypes.
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 120lbs
General Appearance: Being that Nyx is a Betazoid and Betazoids are humanoid, she doesn't have anything...well...majorly wierd about her appearance. In fact, the only way to really tell that she isn't human is to take a good look at her eyes. Like all people from Betazed, she has completely black pupils and irises. They really stand out against her very pale skin. She has a slender, lithe build, and while she does have a bit of muscle on her, she is certainly not an athlete. Her hair is sleek and black, with bangs that are trimmed so that they hang just past her eyebrows but not down into her eyes. When on duty she keeps it pulled back in tight bun. When off duty? Well, her hairstyle generally is indicative of her mood. When in a good mood, she'll have it pulled up into some perky looking ponytail, messy bun, pigtails, braids, or even dreadlocks (though not often, considering it's really rather harsh on her hair...and hard to tame back into a bun when time to go on duty). When depressed or upset over something, she simply let's it stay loose. Nyx has full lips, that are often painted in various dark shades when she's off duty: her current favorite shade is burgandy.
Family: (Please state names, ages, and relation)

Psychological Profile
Basic Personality: Nyx is very adventurous, and has been since she was little. It was this adventurous drive that led her to apply for Star Fleet Academy. She's always willing to try something new, and has a very curious nature about her. In times of crisis, sometimes she can get a bit frazzled, mostly due to her psionic abilities (afterall, feeling everyone else's emotions on top of her own in a rather scary situation is rather tough to deal with). She's very open and honest, and if you need an honest opinion about something, she would be one to seek out. Sometimes when explaining something, she tends to ramble a bit, seemingly straying from the topic. Either call her to task or give her a moment, she'll eventually get to the point.
Faults:
Blunt - Like most Betazoids, Nyx is all about honesty...the problem is, sometimes she can be a bit too honest, to the point of being very very blunt. She doesn't seem to understand the importance of telling 'little white lies' for the sake of avoiding hurting another's feelings or worse, offending someone with differing views. This, if it isn't tamed down somewhat, could be a career ender if she isn't careful.
Tunnel Vision - ...not literal tunnel vision...but it's an apt way to describe how Nyx gets when she is focused on a task. Often she unconsciously blocks out what is going on around her, losing sight of something going on in the background that just -might- be important. When forced out of her mindset doing a task, she can be a bit irritable.
Strong Willed - If asked to do something that goes against her principles or she disagrees with something, Nyx is not one to sit back and let it pass without trying to sway the situation. Whether it's simply speaking her mind or as severe as refusing to comply to an order, it really just depends on the given circumstances.
Strengths:
Psionics - Her inherent psionic abilities are definitely plus, and was one of the reasons she was appointed the comms. officer position on the Endeavor. Nyx is not very powerful in comparison to some of her other Betazoid peers, but her telepathic and empathic abilities definitely give her an edge over her non psionic crewmates.
((OOC note: ...any sort of major mind reading will be pre-arranged with whoever Nyx is interacting with, as godmoding is so easy to do with psionics. Things she is able to do, however, include picking up surface thoughts (ie "Did I remember to shut off the reclimater before I left my cabin?"...in otherwords, nothing deep or horribly secretive), reading a person's emotions, and in the case of other psionic abled races and non-psionics she is close to (ie a lover or very close friend), she can communicate telepathically. She generally has no issues in reading humans and Vulcans, as these are races she has had numerous encounters with while growing up. When it comes to meeting new alien species, however, she has a much more difficult time reading them, until she becomes more familiar with that species.))
Open minded - Nyx is pretty open to new ideas and new cultures, and is one to try anything new. If she likes whatever it is, she'll gush about it. If she doesn't...well...she won't hesitate to say something about it.
Active - Nyx is never one to just sit idle. Even when off duty, she's usually busy, whether it's browsing Star Fleet's network for entertainment, popping off to the Holodeck, getting in a workout, practicing her psionic abilities, or simply going over reading material pertaining to her duties on the Endeavor.
History: Nuitanna Nyx was born on Earth, the youngest daughter to a pair of diplomats working at the Betazoid Consulate in San Francisco. She spent the first 10 years of her life on Earth, playing alongside human children as she and her sister went to school in San Francisco. Nyx absolutely found humans to be fascinating, especially once her psionic abilities began to surface. Conversations at her home were generally conducted in verbal silence, using telepathy to communicate amongst the family. Humans, however, were so...noisy! And vocal about everything! Much to her parent's dismay, the young Betazoid picked up the 'bad habits' of Earth's inhabitants, and it was perhaps that reason why her parents requested to be transferred to a new consulate. Little Nyx was so disappointed...even more so when she found out that they were going to planet Vulcan.
The next eight years of her life were spent on Vulcan were frustrating. Everything seemed so strict and rigid, and she longed to go back to the chaos she had on Earth. For the life of her she couldn't understand why these people supressed their emotions, and it irritated Nyx considerably. She once said to her parents, "Vulcans have emotions. I can feel them. They just squish them down, lock them up, and hope that they don't get loose." Coming from a Betazoid upbringing, where honesty in everything, including ones emotions, was a norm, this emotional suppression simply didn't make any sense to her. As she grew older, she felt the need to do...something...anything. With her parents quite content with their posting at the Betazoid Consulate on Vulcan, it was likely they wouldn't be leaving for sometime. And then, one day a thought came to her: why not join Star Fleet? It would give her the opportunity to go back to Earth, to interact with the humans that had so fascinated her as a child. When the idea was brought up to her parents, it wasn't exactly welcomed. Afterall, the Betazoids were a peaceful race, and it seemed like Star Fleet was sticking its nose into one conflict or another (a gross exaggeration of course). An argument ensued, but in the end Nyx held her own. She would join the Fleet, with or without their blessing. The young Betazoid put in her application, and the second she was finished with her final year of higher education, she boarded the first ship bound for the Sol System. She has yet to repair the rift that formed that day, but perhaps one day she will.
Nyx threw herself headlong into her studies at the Academy, but was rather torn. To do more hands on exploring (ie on away missions), being a science officer was the way to go. You always need a science officer of some sort, to run scans of the atmospheric conditions, on soil sample, and on plant and animale life on a planet's surface. Then again...as a communications officer, she would be getting the chance speak with new species. In the beginning, she tried to pursue both, figuring eventually she would figure out what she wanted to do and would put more emphasis on the one she chose. Graduation day passed, as of a year ago, and she never did end up making a choice between the two. For the past year, she has been posted at Star Fleet Command as one of a cabal of communications officers. She eventually was assigned to the USS Endeavor. Originally, she was to be just one of many science officers on board the ship. Recently, however, she was informed that she would be taking on the duties of chief communications officer. Apparently the original comm. officer was caught doing something illegal in many systems (including the Sol System) with a bunch of Orion women and would be court martialed for his indiscretions. It was the thinking of Star Fleet Command that a Betazoid would have an advantage as a chief comm. officer, given the inherent psionic abilities their species' posesses. The fact that she was just an ensign was ignored at this point for this very reason.
...time can only tell if this was a wise decision. For the time being, Nyx is positively stoked!
