Folicia nodded taking a sip of her tea. "That is true." she said. "So, why don't you tell me about your self, Nyx? Where are you from?" It was good to know where people were from when you would be working with them onboard a small ship like Endevour. Cultures seemed to clash when you didn't know much about some one or something. That's why they created the Prime directive isn't it? Folicia recalled being in the academy how they'd learned of the Enterprise under Captain Krirk, they ran into a lot of trouble with crew, and aliens alike because they didn't fully understand each other.

Tony nodded slightly as he listened to the security officer beside him talk about his son and the woman that he assumed was Tom's ex-wife. He loved his children dearly, and he couldn't imagine how hard it would be to be seperated from them. Yes, the next few months he would be without his family, but it was just a temporary situation.
"I imagine choosing to let him stay with his mother was an easy choice...but it sounds like you made what you felt was the best decision regarding his care."
The engineer finished his Turkish coffee, sliding his cup forward. The bar keep moved to get him a refill, but the older gentleman simply shook his head. Too much of that stuff this late at night, and he would be up till all hours.
"Do you get the chance to communicate with Joseph that often?"

"That is true. So, why don't you tell me about your self, Nyx? Where are you from?"
The black haired ensign leaned back in her chair, shrugging a little bit.
"Well, I was born on Earth actually. My parents worked for the Betazoid Consulate in San Francisco, and we lived there for about ten years. After that, they took a posting at the consulate on Vulcan."
Nyx looked down, plucking at the sleeve of her blue and black uniform. Her tone and body language was a clear indicator that she didn't have the fondest of opinions on living on the planet Vulcan.
"I was there for 8 years. Soon as I graduated from school, I applied to Star Fleet. 4 years later, here I am."
She looked over at Folicia, anxious to know more about the woman across from her.
"What about you? Are you from Earth or what?"

Folicia nodded sipping her tea. "Yes, I was born on Earth, Kansas actually, completely land locked and working on farms most of my childhood. But I followed in my fathers foot steps and signed up for Star Fleet as soon as I graduated school." The near human brushed some of her hair behind her ears, then took another sip of her tea. "So you lived on Vulcan? What was that like?" Folcicia had always wondered about Vulcan, her mothers parents lived there, and the only time she'd seen them was when her grand parents came to earth to visit. Even being part Vulcan she'd never set foot on the planet.

"Not as often as I'd like. Joseph is only four so I don't think he fully understands that it's really me on the monitor." Tom couldn't help but smile a little thinking of his young son poking at the monitor and asking questions about about the funny game that looked like daddy. "He takes after his old man, you see, easily distracted. I wish I had a holophoto of him to show you, but I sadly don't carry one on me." Tom moved his drink around the bottom of the glass, feeling guilty that he wouldn't be there to see his son grow. Who could tell when the next time the Stardust and Endevour would be simultaneously stationed at the same Starbase?

"So you lived on Vulcan? What was that like?"
Nyx rolled her eyes, "Like any other desert planet: hot, dry and dusty."
At first, she didn't say anything more about it. Then she realized that more than likely, her table-mate would want to know more than just the weather there on Vulcan. Nyx sighed and scratched at the back of her neck as she gathered her thoughts a bit. Honestly, she'd HATED living on Vulcan. It wasn't that she hated the Vulcans themselves or anything like that...their culture just annoyed the hell out of her. Logic this, no emotions that. Blah blah blah. Finally, she spoke again.
"I have to say...Vulcans just confuse me in general...but the capital city is gorgeous. And some of their temples are just breathtaking. We visited a couple when my family first arrived there, a chance to "learn about a different culture" as my mother put it."

Folicia smiled warmly. "My mother told me that the temples were beautiful, but I've never had the chance to visit any of them." The near human took the final sip of her tea and then looked up again at Nyx. The girl seemed to have not enjoyed her time on Vulcan, so it was probably best not to press the matter much farther. Secretly Folicia hoped they would visit Vulcan some time during their travels.

Tony was about to answer, when his touch pad emitted a beep tone. He raised an eyebrow and took a look. A message from Starfleet...wonder what that was about. He didn't say anything to Tom as he read it over. Finally, after a moment or two, the engineer let out a sigh and rose from his bar stool.
"I'd lay off the hard stuff if I were you. Looks like someone is calling a staff meeting tomorrow morning. Who knows, might be we get to meet our new captain..."
The older gentleman certainly hadn't forgotten the topic they had been discussing. Had he known Tom better, he probably would've laid a hand on his shoulder, said something that would be intended to be reassuring. He didn't know the security officer that well though, and thus simply said...
"Hopefully next time we talk, you'll have a holophoto of him to show. Sounds like a cute kid you've got there."

Nyx nodded in agreement. While she may not have enjoyed her stay on Vulcan, she could at least agree on the architectual beauty of its temples.
"Who knows, maybe Endeavor will head that way. Honestly though? I'm hoping we hit Bajor sometime in our trip...well, that it is if we're bound for exporing more of the Alpha Quadrant anyway."
Her touch pad let out a tiny beep, but the young Betazoid woman simply pushed it aside. She leaned forward, an eager smile on her face as she regarded Folicia.
"I've only heard a little about the Bajorans, but they seem pretty fascinating. I've heard they had technology before humanity was even evolved enough to be walking on two legs. No idea if that's true though...I mean seriously, if they had, why would the Cardassian's have steam rolled them?" She paused for a moment letting that sink in, before continuing on, tilting her head to the side slightly. "We had a comm. officer that was transferred from Deep Space 9 to here, and he said that they're extremely religious. They actually have a death chant or something performed as a funeral rite, and it's two hours long."
Nyx rested her chin on one of her hands, letting out a somewhat wistful sigh.
"To think, they managed to maintain their culture like that, despite the Cardassian occupation. I wonder if their temples and shrines on Bajor are in tact or not..."

That was interesting. "I wonder..." Folicia said her voice slightly wistful. Cardassians weren't very popular, not these days any way. The Marquis had started their little war against them despite the fact that the Federation was still trying to build up relations with the species. I wonder how Captain and his Cardassian wife are? the near human thought of her former captain, the man was so head over heels for his wife, the rest of the crew didn't care for her at all. Probably why they didn't travel together. "Who knows, maybe we will stop at Bajor, I mean, I'd love to explore some ruins if the temples aren't intact, and I'd die to see some intact." She chuckled a little more light humored.

Tom nodded as the engineer spoke. He was really a friendly person and he could feel that they could possibly become friends in the future, a thought that lifted his spirits. "Thanks, man," he said with a crooked grin, "It was great to meet you."

Tony returned the grin with a pleasant smile of his own and a nod.
"Nice to meet you as well. I'll see you at tomorrow's meeting then."
The engineer turned to leave, offering a wave to Tom as he exited the mess hall. Meeting one of his fellow crew members, one who didn't seem horribly dysfunctional, had definitely helped make his evening better. While he certainly still missed his family, he at least had enjoyed the conversation and it had been a nice diversion from laying in his bunk, stewing over negative thoughts. Who knows, perhaps he had just made his first friend aboard the ship? It certainly was a pleasant thought, to say the least.
(( Tony has left the thread. You can see him in action in Episode 1 however. ))

Nyx picked up the thought regarding Folicia's previous Captain, but brushed it aside for the moment. No, she was focused on Bajor now. While she had certainly been happy during her time spent on Earth, that hadn't stopped her from daydreaming about visiting other places. Bajor just happened to be one of them. And then there was the briefly entertained notion of visiting the Klingon homeworld...
"Who knows, maybe we will stop at Bajor, I mean, I'd love to explore some ruins if the temples aren't intact, and I'd die to see some intact."
Nyx broke free of her thoughts, smiling at Folicia. Hey, this part Vulcan person chuckled...now THAT was something she hadn't expected!
"Well, you're more likely to get a chance to see them than I am. Seriously? I think I'll be glued to the bridge while everyone else gets to have fun on away missions...which...sorta stinks, since I picked up a study in sciences hoping for a chance to get to go planetside sometime."
She looked up at the ceiling, continuing in a dreamy sounding voice.
"Just think...setting foot on an unknown planet...armed with nothing but a phaser and a scanner...collecting samples of materials that have never been seen by a Federation officer..."

Folica nodded. "I know, it's all so excited, exactly the sort of thing I joined star fleet for." The woman stretched leaning back in her chair a bit. She couldn't wait to set off, it'd be like being new in space again. "You know of any of the other crew?" She asked scratching the side of her pointed ear. She hadn't heard yet if Remmak had gotten his transfer.

"You know of any of the other crew?"
Nyx shook her head. "Nope, you're the only one I've met so far." She lifted the tube shaped glass her Warp 9 energy drink came in and took a generous swallow. Her tablemate seemed anxious about something...what it was, Nyx wasn't too entirely sure. Might have something to do with being assigned to the Endeavor...maybe something to do with the hobgoblin...
Finally, Nyx couldn't stand it...
"You seem kinda anxious there," the young Betazoid said. "Nervous about tomorrow? Or something else?"
